Unjust Intonation also seeks to perform increasingly diverse repertoire as the group develops; while A Cappella can sometimes default into the realm of “white girl indie pop,” we hope to push the programming envelope beyond this, and represent artists and songs from a wider spectrum of musical styles and backgrounds. This goal has expanded our repertoire to include songs from genres such as R&B, contemporary classical, punk, and metal, among others, and we hope to continue this expansion in years to come!

We also care deeply about mentorship and education; our ensemble is structured so that everyone, regardless of experience level, can explore any part of A Cappella singing that is of interest to them, be that trying out a new voice part, beatboxing, arranging, or even choreography!

Within the walls of Arnhold Hall, where incredible but often very intense school-run Classical and Jazz ensembles rehearse every day, Unjust Intonation is a bright, welcoming, inclusive, and supportive ensemble based on fun and the joy of music without the pressure of being graded, while also seeking to perform at the highest level possible.

Founded in September 2022, Unjust Intonation is an all-gender, student run A Cappella group at The New School in New York City.

Created to build performance opportunities specifically geared towards non-music-performance majors, we welcome students from all of The New School’s colleges to audition, fostering opportunities for cross-college collaboration that are uniquely strong. And indeed, all of TNS’s colleges were represented in the 12 members of the 2022-2023 season (our inaugural year)!

In our first year of existence, Unjust Intonation competed in the Northeast quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). We also performed for the community, both on- and off-campus, several times throughout the year. These performances include: singing as the Greek Chorus in the Lang theater production of Iphigenia among the Taurians; performing as the Outstanding Student group at the Lang commencement ceremony; caroling in Central Park; presenting a full-length spring concert; and showing our support for the striking faculty by singing at the Student-Faculty Solidarity Concert.
